Nuri Bilge Ceylan?ın Mayıs Sıkıntısından sonra çektiği ikinci uzun metrajlı filmi. Orta metrajlı Kasaba ve ardından Mayıs Sıkıntısı filmlerinde Çanakkale?nin Yenice kasabasını kendisine mekan olarak seçen yönetmen, Uzak filmi için karlar altında bir İstanbul?u tercih etmiş.Film, ideallerinden uzaklaşmaya başladıkça yaşamının anlamını yitiren ve uzaklara gitmeyi düşleyen bir adamla, hayallerini gerçekleştirmek için İstanbula gelen bir gencin hikayesini anlatıyor.Minimalist bir sinema anlayışına sahip olan Nuri Bilge Ceylan, filmin senaryosunu ve yönetimini üstlendiği gibi, görüntü yönetmenliğini de kendisi yapmış. Sinemasında doğuya özgü yavaşlığı ve sadeliği temel almasıyla tanınan yönetmenin son filmi, en olgun çalışması olarak kabul edildi. Uzak, 39. Altın Portakal Film Festivali'nde En İyi Film ödülü alırken, Mehmet Emin Toprak'a En İyi Yardımcı Erkek Oyuncu ve Ceylan'a da En İyi Yönetmen ve En İyi Senaryo ödüllerini getirdi.
